Process

The Essay Coach’s process is driven by a unique approach, guided and adopted from something called competency-based education (CBE). This methodology focuses on a specific work-integrated learning strategy. Essentially, The Essay Coach harnesses learnings from CBE curricula and applies them to the essay writing process. The milestone-based framework allows students to develop practical skills based on their ability to master specific tasks, learning micro-activities, or ‘competencies’ at their own pace, regardless of knowledge base, situation, or assignment. This method is tailored to meet different learning abilities and can lead to more efficient student outcomes and overall understanding of each component of the writing process.

How we apply CBE to essay writing:
The Essay Coach breaks down the essay writing process into various ‘checkpoints’ to ensure students have developed the necessary skills to excel in each portion of the writing piece. For example, The Essay Coach takes a ‘ground-up’ approach by evaluating writing sub-skills (i.e. drafting an effective outline, developing a strong thesis, transitioning between paragraphs smoothly, using concise language, sourcing effective quotations and evidence to drive home your argument).
